Choosing a Class in Dead Rails: Gear, Roles and Unlocks

Updated Oct 9, 2026

Compare the class you can equip now with the role your train crew needs, using their recorded gear, role and unlock route.

Classes are selected at the Tailor in the lobby. The class reference records starting gear, abilities and Bond costs; event classes can require a mode unlock instead of a normal purchase. Bloxism's class board presents its 34 cataloged records as a selection screen, but the live Tailor is the final check for availability and price.

Choose by the job you need to cover

New to the route: None is free and starts with a Shovel. Miner is a low-cost fuel-and-mining start; Doctor brings healing items and a teammate revive option. Doctor's revive value falls if you play alone. Compare their recorded gear before spending Bonds.

Keeping the train moving: Conductor starts with Coal and is documented to increase the train's maximum speed. That helps a crew focused on travel, but it does not replace fuel planning. The train reference explains the gauge, firebox and alternative fuels.

Early fighting and travel: Cowboy has a Revolver, ammo, Saddle and a Horse at the start. Ironclad begins with armor but trades mobility for protection. Their strengths answer different problems, so a single rank cannot decide the right purchase.

Unusual roles: Necromancer's melee reanimation costs its own health. Horse, Eggslinger, Santa and Krampus are tied to event or challenge unlocks in the class reference; do not treat their old unlock instructions as a current shop offer.

Check before buying

  1. Pick the role missing from your crew: travel, healing, protection, combat or a personal challenge.
  2. Open the class record and compare its starting gear, passive and unlock route.
  3. Check whether the class is selectable or purchasable at today's Tailor.
  4. Spend Bonds only after seeing the live price and confirming you want that role for more than one run.

Bonds are a persistent lobby currency, while Money is usually earned and spent within a run. The Bonds reference and Money reference explain that distinction. Bloxism does not read your owned classes or Bond balance.
