Dead Rails First-Run Guide — Surviving Your First 20km
Updated Jul 14, 2026
The route
Stage 1The shape of a run
You and your crew ride a train through the undead West: the train needs fuel (coal), stops invite looting, night brings the horde, and distance banks Bonds — the progression currency that buys classes (which to buy first). Runs end in death or triumph; either way the Bonds keep. That's the mindset: every run is a Bonds deposit, and greed is the main withdrawal.
Stage 2Fuel is the game
The train stops without coal, and a stopped train at night is a buffet. Coal discipline: someone owns the fuel count at all times, top up at every safe opportunity, and NEVER pass a coal source with a light reserve because the next stop "probably" has some. Half of all wiped runs are fuel bankruptcies dressed up as zombie problems.
Stage 3Looting: the greed curve
Stops are risk-priced: quick grabs near the tracks are nearly free; deep building dives during dusk are how runs end. The rule for new crews — loot with a leash: one player stays within sprint distance of the train, everyone leaves at the first night warning, and no one solo-dives interiors until you know the enemy types (what's hunting you). Valuables (gold, silver, the Jade Tablet tier) convert to money at the next stop; weapons and heals get used; everything else is weight.
Stage 4Night protocol
When dark falls: train moving if possible, everyone aboard, barricade the open sides, conserve ammo (melee handles stragglers; bullets are for the horde). Nights are survivable with discipline and lethal without it — that's the whole design.
Stage 5Your first Bonds purchases
Die, bank, buy: Doctor or Miner at 15 Bonds are the correct first classes — cheap, immediately useful, and they make every subsequent run bank faster (full class rankings). Save the 75+ Bond flexes until survival past 40km is routine.
Quick answer
Your first Dead Rails run will probably end in a zombie pile 15km in. Here's how to make it a profitable death instead of a pointless one.
