Nikola Tesla in Dead Rails — The Lab, the Boss & the Tesla Cannon
Updated Jul 14, 2026
Quick answer
Late in a Dead Rails run, the tracks pass the Tesla Lab — and inside is the game's nastiest optional fight: Nikola Tesla himself, reimagined as a supernatural boss. Here's whether to stop, and how to win if you do.
The fight
Tesla is a boss-class enemy with about 5,000 HP who hits for ~100 in melee and 300+ at range — his ranged arcs will delete unprepared teams. This is a coordinated-team fight, not a solo detour:
- Spread out. His ranged damage punishes stacked teams; approach from multiple angles so only one player eats each arc.
- Bring sustain. A Doctor-class teammate or a stack of healing items turns the fight from a coin-flip into a grind.
- Melee windows exist — after his ranged volleys, commit briefly, then back out before the melee swing.
Why bother: the loot
The lab area is tied to the Tesla Cannon — one of the strongest weapons in the game (explosive hits around 1,650 with a damage aura). The cannon can also be obtained from the Evil Church or by crafting, so the lab stop is about risk appetite: a strong team banks a weapon spike; a weak team wipes 60km into a good run.
Fitting it into a run
- Only stop if your train is stocked
fuel, ammo, heals . and everyone's alive.
- Park defensively; zombies don't pause while you boss-hunt.
- Assign one player to stay within sprint distance of the train.
Verdict
Confident, geared team: stop — the cannon trivializes the remaining kilometers. Scraping by: keep rolling. Dead Rails punishes greed harder than cowardice.
