Quick answer

The threats in 99 Nights have different answers. Cave guardians must be defeated to open a missing-child cave; The Deer cannot be killed. Do not treat a lit campfire as protection from every enemy.

The Deer: escape, do not fight

The Deer pursues players outside the campfire safe zone at night. Weapons cannot damage it. Shine a charged Flashlight at it for a brief stun, then move toward the lit fire or another safe location. If the campfire goes out, its protection disappears and The Deer can enter camp.

Wolves and alpha wolves: early cave guards

The Dino Kid's locked cave has five wolves. The Kraken Kid's cave has four alpha wolves. Defeat every guardian around a cave gate; the last one drops the matching colored key. This makes the guardian fight part of the rescue, not a random obstacle you can bypass by following smoke.

Bears: later cave guards

The Squid Kid's yellow-key cave has two bears. The Koala Kid's gray-key cave has six. Prepare healing and a way home before starting those fights. Their caves appear after later campfire upgrades; check the current map rather than assuming every cave is available at the start.

Cultists: the campfire exception

Cultists can enter a lit campsite, so a full fuel bar is not a defense against a raid. The missing children are documented in locked caves guarded by animals, not in cultist camps. Keep the cave rescue route separate from cultist activity on the map.
