Saving the Lost Children

Updated Oct 9, 2026

Find all four locked caves, defeat their guardians for colored keys, and bring each child back to the campfire.

99 Nights in the Forest game artwork

Quick answer

Four children are missing: Dino Kid, Kraken Kid, Squid Kid and Koala Kid. Each is inside a colored locked cave. The route depends on your campfire level and the guardians at that cave.

How a cave rescue works

  1. Expand the map

Fuel the Campfire. Higher fire levels reveal the deeper cave areas.

  2. Find the locked cave

Check its gate color and guardians. The caves do not all appear at the beginning of a run.

  3. Defeat all guardians

The final guardian drops the colored key for that gate. A stealth route cannot replace this key step.

  4. Open the cave and carry the child home

Bring the child inside the campfire's radius. Once settled, the child sets up a colored tent at camp.

Which rescue comes next?

ChildGate and guardiansTypical fire progression
Dino KidRed key; five wolvesFirst cave, usually after level 2, sometimes level 3 to reveal fully
Kraken KidBlue key; four alpha wolvesLater cave, usually around level 4, sometimes level 5
Squid KidYellow key; two bearsAround level 5, sometimes level 6
Koala KidGray key; six bearsLevel 6

The levels are the community wiki's reported reveal points and can vary with the generated map. The colored key drops after the last guardian dies; check the gate before leaving the area. Rescues add to the day counter, and each child keeps their own tent color even if you save them out of order.
