StarPets, AdoptMe.gg & Pet Shops — Safe or Scam?

Updated Jul 14, 2026

Search Adopt Me for ten minutes and you'll hit ads for third-party marketplaces selling pets for real money. Kids ask, parents ask, everyone asks: are they safe? Here's the honest picture.

What these sites are

Third-party marketplaces (StarPets and AdoptMe.gg are the big names) let people buy Adopt Me pets with real currency. The seller meets you in-game and hands the pet over through a normal trade. The sites themselves generally do deliver pets — that part isn't the problem.

The problem

Buying pets for real money is against Roblox's Terms of Service. Cross-platform trades — anything traded for value outside the game — violate the rules, and enforcement lands on accounts, not websites:

  • Accounts involved can be warned or banned, and pets acquired this way can be removed.
  • There is zero recourse if anything goes wrong — Roblox support will not help recover a real-money pet trade by design.
  • Kids using a parent's card on third-party sites have none of the protections a Robux purchase carries.

That's the trade-off nobody's ad mentions: the sites can be "legit" as businesses while every transaction still gambles your Roblox account.

The gray zone people cite

Yes, plenty of players use these sites without consequences. Enforcement is inconsistent — that's true. But "usually unenforced" is a bad foundation for an account carrying years of inventory, and the risk concentrates exactly when it hurts: high-value pets attract attention.

Safer routes to the same pets

  1. Trade up in-game — slower, free, zero account risk. Our values list and trade calculator exist for exactly this.
  2. Robux → premium eggs and gamepasses — the sanctioned way money enters Adopt Me.
  3. Events — seasonal events hand out tradeable pets for playtime.

Bottom line

The big marketplaces mostly aren't scams in the "take your money and vanish" sense — the risk is the ToS, and it's real. If the account matters to you, keep its economy inside the game.
