Overview[1]
The Northern Expedition is a large mountainous island which features many ice and snow-themed fish. It can only be accessed via a portal in the main map, and is one of the only locations that exist outside of the main map's boundaries. It is considered as part of the First Sea. The Northern Expedition consists five sublocations; four out of the five sublocations are currently the only places in the game where the player's Oxygen level decreases gradually. The player also loses Warmth, posing a risk to exploration. Blizzard and Avalanche events occur only at the Northern Expedition, but their respective mutations will be available anywhere.
The Northern Expedition/Northern Summit can be accessed by entering a large portal in the southwest region of the map. When the player enters the portal, they are teleported into the middle of the ocean in a new area. Going forward (facing South East), the player can reach Northern Summit. The island presents the player with the challenge of scaling the mountain in its entirety. The specific coordinates for the portal to Northern Expedition are. Throughout the player's journey on the mountain, the player needs to be aware of two things: Oxygen and a new mechanic introduced called Temperature. After passing a certain height in Overgrowth Caves, the player's temperature and oxygen levels will become to lower. As the player's oxygen levels deplete, the edges of their screen begin to turn red. As the temperature bar lowers, the screen begins to "frost", indicating that they're getting colder. When either of them run out, the player dies, and respawns at their last spawn point. To help with this, the player can buy Oxygen Tanks (Basic, Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced) and a Winter Cloak. It's recommended to buy the Winter Cloak (7,500C$ C$), as it can keep the player warm indefinitely. The cloak's coordinates are. There are also campfires at campsites to keep players warm and refill stations to replenish oxygen levels. The player may need be wary of Avalanche's, which is an event that rarely occurs naturally or can be started by an Avalanche Totem. In the event of one, snow blocks begin to spawn randomly across the mountain and fall to the bottom.

Patch history
If the player looks from a certain angle, they can see each island's labels from a distance when in the middle of the ocean in the new area. This is the 3rd island in the game that contains a vault in it, the other two being the Vertigo, and Ancient Isle. Despite there being a key hole to the vault for Heaven's Rod, no key is required to open the door. In the original Northern Expedition release, due to bugs, 4 Fishes were Unobtainable. These were the: Frigid Crab, Frigid Taco, Frigid Antlers and Frigid Mammoth Tusk. This has since been fixed in the version 1.12.0 update and the Overgrowth Caves and Frigid Cavern Bestiaries can now be completed. Ironically, even though the name of the new area is called Northern Expedition, the direction the player must go to access the portal to the area is South. This is the 3rd area in the game that teleports the player into a new area, the first one being the Vertigo, and the second one being The Snow Globe. This does not include using a Conception Conch, as its teleportation depends on where the player has set their spawn point. The area reuses dialogue from some of the NPCs seen during the Fischgiving event. The Northern Expedition was added in update 1.11.0 during Fischmas 2024. Before, when the player was running low on oxygen, there was no visible effect to their screen. Prior to update 1.11.1 there was no shipwright in the Northern Expedition.
