Usage & Tactics
Although designed for short to medium-range battles, its damage makes it a viable option in long-range engagements if the opportunity were to present itself. Even though its fellow carbine and direct competitor, the M4A1, excels in the recoil and fire-rate department, the AKS-74U, when used correctly, can have laser-like accuracy and makes up for its lackluster fire rate (similar to the UMP-45) with its DPS which can shred all players, armored or not. Even as a formidable weapon against most enemies who cross your path, watch your ammo. When reloading, take cover since you are defenseless during the animation, like every other gun. Because of the AKS-74U's high damage (5-3 shots to down an unarmored player) is a viable weapon for tap firing at longer ranges. You can typically down an enemy in just a few shots if you're steady and precise. Similarly to the M4A1, the recoil gets weaker by a lot after a couple shots which actually makes it superior to the M4A1 in long range engagements, if you have the element of surprise and recoil control that is.
Pros & Cons
Tight spread. Moderate fire rate. High damage. Moderate recoil. Great armour piercing, Slow ammo consumption. Can be found in gold and red crates. Can be upgraded. Lengthy reload. Takes 5.5 slots. Medium mobility. Noticeable target for other players. Unmodded iron sights can be difficult to use. However, when used to them, these become better, as they have less FOV decrease. Despite being $150 less than a UMP-45, it is more expensive on the long term due to refill prices.
Patch history
The AKS-74U is generally superior to the M4A1 in terms of damage (unarmoured and even more so against armour, as 6 torso shots are needed on Tier 1-2 armour without damage drop off), though it's high recoil can make it difficult to handle for players not experienced with recoil control. It's recommended to go with the M4A1 if you're looking for more stability, accuracy, and fire rate. This weapon's appearance and name is inspired from its real-world counterpart, the AKS-74U, which is actually classified as a PDW (Personal-Defence Weapon) and not an AR (Assault Rifle). The AKS-74U's price was increased from $3250 to $3750 in update V1.2.0. Then decreased to $3400 in V1.3.0. And since the fire sale update, It is decreased to 1750$. During previous Christmas Events, The AKS-74U was able to be obtained from presents with a rare chance. During the Public Dev phase of the game, the AKS-74U used to have the same model and sound as the AKM without the stock. The Old AKS-74U Model was from Call of Duty: Black Ops III but got changed to avoid copyright in Update V1.3.1 (Remember this is the guy who protects his IP like his life) There is a special AKS-74U variant avaible only to admins: the AKS-74UN. It's visually the same but has 60 rounds, 1.6 M4a1 recoil and a laser, without the Kobra sight. Just like any other RCU/admin weapon not much else is known, but it probably has more damage as well.
