Overview[1]
Acts as a heat source; Town; Outlaw Camps The Campfire is a Tool in Dead Rails.
The Campfire is an item that can be found randomly in Abandoned Buildings. It acts as a heat source, allowing players to reduce their freezing effect. Players can light the Campfire by interacting with it, starting a fire that will burn out if it runs out of fuel. Once a Campfire runs out of fuel, it is dead and no longer usable. Campfires start at 30 fuel once lit which decreases by 1 every second. Players can put Fuel items on Campfires to replenish their fuel, with certain items giving more fuel than others. The amount of fuel provided is 1/10 of the item's fuel value to be exact. For example, normal corpses (100 fuel normally) provide 10 fuel and Coal (600 fuel normally) provides 60. Campfires will run out of fuel even when stored in the Sack. Unlike other items, the Campfire's name and description is visible to players by default without them having to hover over it first. This remains functional through walls and at great distances, though it's likely caused by a bug.

Strategy
The Campfire is very effective at cleaning up excess corpses due to being portable (unlike the Train's furnace). The Campfire can be used as a waypoint of sorts thanks to players being able to see it from far away and through walls. Examples of this are leaving one at the Train or having teammates carry them.
Patch history
Despite the fire visuals, the Campfire does not actually provide any light. Despite developers mentioning that the Campfire heals nearby players, it doesn't. This is likely due to a bug. Sometimes it can actually heal the players The Campfire's name is written as "CampFire" in the game files. Campfire is the third game mechanic that requires fuel to function properly. The first two are the Train and the Christmas Train's back furnace. When storing and unstoring Campfire with a Sack, its lit visual effect disappears, despite still being capable of keeping the players warm. This is likely an oversight. While the Campfire is technically a bunch of logs, formerly, it couldn't be used as Fuel. Due to this, after an unknown update, the Campfire can now be used as Fuel.
