Coal can be bought from General Store for $20. Coal is the most efficient and accessible Fuel source in the game, being always found at Safezone General Stores and fueling the Train for exactly 1/4th of its entire tank. Coal can always be found in the General Store at Fortified Towns, in the Mines at Sterling or in Abandoned Mines. Coal also has a chance of appearing inside Abandoned Buildings. Coal can also be bought in the lobby for 2 Bonds. Lastly, Coal can also be found by mining Coal Ores scattered across the Desert, with each dropping 1-3 Coals. The Conductor and Miner also spawn with 2. Due to possessing the highest fuel value out of all standard fuel items, being relatively easy obtain, and having a small size (making for easy storage), Coal is arguably the most useful fuel source in the game.

Patch history
It is the second most effective fuel source in the game, beaten by Nikola Tesla and Easter Bunny corpse. However, they can only be encountered at the end when Fuel is entirely irrelevant. You would need 20 coal ($400) to make it to 80km from the start and 16 coal ($320) when using Conductor. If bought in Lobby and using normal speed Trains, you would need 20 coal (40 Bonds) to make it to 80km from the start and 16 coal (32 Bonds) when using Conductor. If bought in Lobby and using the Wooden Train, you would need 18 coal (36 Bonds) to make it to 80km from the start and 14 coal (28 Bonds) when using Conductor. Before recent updates, Coal used to fill 1/3 of the total fuel of the Train. It takes about 2.5 Coals without stopping or slowing down to make it to each checkpoint.
