Overview[1]

Sterling (also called the Town of Sterling), is a unique location in Dead Rails. More info about looting More info about lore

Sterling is an abandoned mining town that always spawns between 9km-75km on the left side of the tracks near a mountain. This mountain is unlike other mountains since it has jagged peaks, which can help identify the location from further away. It appears largely similar to the Towns seen scattered throughout the map, though there are no Enemies in Sterling (excluding the Mineshaft), making it safer than most other locations. Additionally, no loot spawns within the town besides a Ripped Bank Combo found in the Bank, another in the white house, a Torch found in the Sheriff's Office, and a Jade Tablet and a Note found in the Church, along with the loot inside of the Bank's vault. Located behind Sterling is a Mineshaft blocked off with wooden planks, which must be destroyed with Dynamite, only 1 can be found near the minecarts. Upon entering the Mineshaft, they are met with enemies like Skeletons and Dynamite Zombies, with Valuables and Fuel scattered randomly throughout the Mines like Gold Nuggets, Silver Nuggets and pieces of Coal, making this a worthwhile place to raid even if one isn't aiming to get the two exclusive Jade Sword or Strange Mask items. Currently, the Bank always has 5 Bonds, 2 Gold Bars, 1 Silver Bar, 3 Snake Oils, 1 Maxim Gun, and 1 Turret Ammo.

Lore

See more in Lore In the mining town of Sterling, miners were mysteriously going missing, likely from Zombies attacking and killing them. Eventually, the issue got so bad that the mines were sealed off, and all missing miners were declared deceased, with the town's leadership urging people to leave Sterling entirely. The presence of the Jade Tablets, Strange Mask, and Jade Sword likely indicate a different story. A theory mentions that this happened before Nikola Tesla created the Agent, and a strange material inside the mines is the cause for the whole outbreak (which Nikola eventually possessed and started the outbreak) It is unknown exactly when the remaining townsfolk decided to leave Sterling, though the town has likely been abandoned for a long time, given the cobwebs and the general lack of valuables compared to other Towns. It is also unknown why the valuables inside the bank were left there with many digits of the combination scattered throughout the mines.

Notes

First note (found in the first house to the left) Second note (found in the altar in the church, with a Jade Tablet) Third note (found at the top of the church under the bell) A map showing a secret location to the right of the 70km Fortified Town. This was used for the UFO easter egg for the easter event.

Patch history

Enemies such as the Dynamite Zombie and Skeleton will spawn in the Mines, but not forever as some people think. There is a maximum number of enemies the game can spawn before the game stops spawning any more enemies. A single spawn point can spawn the entirety of the spawn pool, meaning the player can camp that spawn to exhaust the spawns one enemy at a time. Sterling is currently the only location in the game to spawn two unique items. However, The Tesla Lab technically has 3 unique items: the Electrocutioner, the Brain In A Jar, and the Strange Machine. In the Lore, the miners living in Sterling were mysteriously going missing, forcing the town's leadership to close up the mines and label all missing miners as dead. It is unknown whether the Strange Mask or the Zombies were to blame for the town's troubles. It may or may not spawn near the 10km Fortified Town. This POI will spawn further from the tracks than most other POIs, making the player have to do additional walking. The Bank of Sterling always has 5 Bonds, and7 Bonds are found where the Jade Sword is located. All bonds you can find is total 12 Bonds You could previously find 16 Bonds before the 5/2/25 update. The Sterling Town is probably named after Sterling City in Texas. There's actually many cities named Sterling in the USA, but since the game was supposed to be set on Texas (the nearest state to Mexico), it's likely named after by the Texas one. Most people would ignore the Valuable items like Gold Bars and Gold nuggets but it can sell for a big amount of Money.
