Overview[1]
Gunsmith; Outlaw Camps; Outlaw's Town; Sheriff; Headframe; Bank; Sterling; Fortified Town; Armored Train The Maxim Gun, also called the Maxim Turret or simply the Turret, is a turret weapon in Dead Rails.
The Maxim Gun is a rapid firing machine gun that fires 8 times per second, mainly designed to be welded to the Train. It unleashes a hailstorm of bullets that can deal with both stronger enemies and large numbers of weaker enemies with ease. To operate a Maxim Gun, simply weld it to the Train and weld a box of Turret Ammo near it. The Maxim Gun can be bought at the Gunsmith for $125. It can also be found rarely in Abandoned Buildings, but more commonly in Outlaw Camps. Additionally, the Castle and Sterling's Bank are guaranteed to spawn a Maxim Gun. Immovable Maxim Guns can also be seen already mounted on both sides of the Armored Train, or on the walls of Fortified Towns and the Outlaw's Town. They always spawn with a box of Turret Ammo, making them immediately usable. These Maxims cannot be unwelded, preventing players from using them away from the current location. Very high damage per shot. Effective against all enemies. Offers incredible accuracy. Guaranteed to spawn in Fortified Town, the Castle, and Sterling's Bank. Ammo lasts for a considerable amount of time. Comes with the Armored Train. Lacks full 360° coverage. Ineffective if enemies get too close. Cannot move while using it. Very expensive when purchased at the Gunsmith, at the cost of 125. High cost of Ammo. Ammo takes up space. Less effective in solo runs.

Strategies
Maxim Guns are very effective against Bosses, being able to mow them down in short amounts of time. When in the Outlaw's Town you can kill the incoming Outlaws by killing an Outlaw manning the Maxim Gun then manning it yourself. On the game's cover art, one player is manning a Maxim Gun facing backwards while the other player is in the cabin. In multiplayer games, this strategy can be used to clear pursuing enemies while preventing them from catching up. You can place the Maxim in the middle of the Train's flatcar as Enemies will most likely be behind it. This, however, makes it easy for Enemies to climb on board and swarm you. Two Maxims can be placed facing each other's backs to ensure full 360° coverage. This however, is very expensive, costing $300 total ($250 for the turrets and $50 for the ammo). This also requires at least 3 players, 2 to use the turrets and 1 to drive the Train. This also wastes ammunition faster. The Maxim Gun is extremely powerful during the final battle at Outlaw's Town.
Patch history
Maxim Guns have had multiple periods of time where they didn't work. The Maxim is currently one of three Weapons that requires the user to weld it to the Train and sit on it to use in the game. The other two are the Cannon and Ballista. The Maxim is currently the only weapon in the game that uses Heavy Ammo. In the real world, the Maxim was the first fully automatic machine gun. Invented in 1884 by Hiram Stevens Maxim, it saw standard service all the way up to World War II, and is still being used in very minor roles to this day. Unlike other Weapons, which contain a full clip when picked up, a Maxim Gun comes without any Ammo inside. Originally, before the Update v1.0.0-alpha.610 (Also called the Train Update) Maxims inside Fortified Towns would auto fire, even being capable of attacking Enemies behind themselves. Players can control Maxims manned by Outlaws at Outlaw's Town, or Soldiers at Fortified Towns. Formerly, Maxims in Fortified Towns were automated and couldn't be manned, while Maxims in Outlaw's Town were also automated (Check reference for further information). As of the Liquid Update, aim of all Maxim Gunners (excluding players) depends on their behaviors. Hostile Maxim Gunners will have relatively inaccurate aim, while friendly Maxim Gunners will have nearly perfect aim. (Check reference for further information). The Armored Train is the only way to spawn a naturally occurring welded Maxim. (Excluding Fortified Towns and Outlaw's Town) The Maxims on the Armored Train are enabled so that friendly Entities can use them.
