Werewolves The Castle, officially known as Vampire Castle, is a unique Building in Dead Rails.
The Castle is a gray stone fort that spawns slightly before the half map distance mark (20km or 40km depending on map length). It is full of Werewolves and Vampires, making it one of the most dangerous locations in the entire game. However, the Castle contains lots of Weapons, Ammunition, and Valuables, making it highly profitable. Additionally, the Castle is the only place where the Vampire Knife, a unique Melee Weapon that restores health on attacks, can be found. It is a high risk-high reward POI where you have to defeat dangerous enemies in return for lots of loot.

The Castle contains 25 total enemies with a mix of Vampires and Werewolves.
Loot
The Castle has 4 fooms containing the following loot: The dining room contains 7 Chairs and Gold Plates at the center table, along with 2 Barrels at the back right corner of the room. It contains 2 Bonds on the left corners of the room. The library contains 22 Books and 4 Gold Bars, along with 3 Barrels total. It contains 7 Bonds, with one in the back left corner behind a Barrel and the rest on the shelves. Some of the valuable items are on the upper shelves, so players must jump or stand on something to access them. The arrangement of the shelves is always the same. The coffin room contains the Vampire Knife and 2 Gold Paintings, along with 1 Barrel at the back right corner of the room. It contains 3 Bonds in the corners without the Barrel. The armory contains a large amount of equipment as well as some other items: 3 Shotgun, Medium, and Light Ammo on the right shelf. 2 Heavy Ammo on the right shelf. 2 Maxim Guns on the back left shelf. 1 Shotgun, Sawed-Off Shotgun, Rifle, and Revolver on the back left shelf. 5 Molotovs on the front left shelf. 4 Bandages on the front left shelf. 2 Silver Bars on the front left shelf. 2 Silver Statues in the center of the room. 1 Gold Statue in the center of the room. 3 Barrels in the back left corner of the room. 6 Bonds, with 4 near the Statues and 2 with the Silver Bars. 545 worth of Valuables, not including corpses or sellable weapons 18 Bonds
Strategy
Using 2 or more Snake Oils, it is possible to loot a small portion of the Castle before enemies start spawning, which is useful if you want the Vampire Knife without having to fight Werewolves. Make sure to empty your Sack for this. First, make sure to approach the Castle without getting too close to prevent enemies from spawning too early. It is recommended to bring a Horse so you can escape without using additional Snake Oils. Once you are near the entrance, drink 2-3 Snake Oils and quickly sprint to the right upstairs room. Make sure to grab the Vampire Knife first so you have a way to quickly heal yourself in combat. Afterwards, you can grab the nearby Bonds and Paintings if you have time or immediately leave if you don't. Since the Werewolves are the greatest threat, use strategies that can deal with them effectively. Vampires are not a big threat as long as you can deal with their teleporting. You can hop onto a torch in the Castle and attack the enemies from above to prevent them from reaching you. A strategy is to wait outside the front for the Werewolves with a Horse. Leave your Horse at the entrance then go in and peek into the 2 rooms to the left and right. Once you see Werewolves spawning, get on the Horse and move away from them while shooting until they are dead. Repeat this until the Werewolves are gone. Head inside and check for any remaining enemies before looting the place. The armory (upper left room) may contain many Werewolves as their spawn point lies at the very back of the room.
Trivia
If players sell every sellable item that spawns within the Castle, along with all the corpses of the Werewolves and Vampires, they will get $1340-1375 total. Note that this is not recommended due to Junk items not worth the time of transporting and selling on top of the Vampire Knife being more useful when used as a weapon (except for the Vampire class which starts with one). Golden Eggs could have been found in the Castle during the Eggstravaganza event in April 2025. The same applied for the Mines, Tesla Lab and Fort Constitution. For an unknown reason, they didn't return in April 2026. The Castle is the perhaps the most obscure location in the game Lore-wise, as there is no explanation for who built it or why there are Werewolves and Vampires inhabiting it. A theory is the Vampires/Werewolves built the castle in an undisclosed spot and revealed it when the Zombie Outbreak occurred, allowing them to roam.
