Overview
The Strange Machine spawns within the Tesla Lab. You can use it to do the secret Unicorn Island challenge. This can be done via the Electrocutioner, Lightning Rods, Holy Water, lightning from the Strange Mask, or any other form of Lightning. The amount of strikes to open the portal is random, taking about 20-60 shots. Through the portal, player will find Unicorn Island, a place with many Unicorns and other players who have also stepped through the portal. An activated portal will emit a blue light with 60 range and a blinding brightness of 10 (for reference, the Mining Helmet's brightness is 1). For some reason, the gate has a higher Lightning attraction rate than other Items (excluding players and Lightning Rods) There is no specific Lore on why this machine has been created.
Usage
Main Article: Unicorn Island To complete this challenge, you need to place the Strange Machine in the ground. Then, use the Electrocutioner to shoot at the bottom of Strange Machine. Use Holy Waters when the Electrocutioner has no Ammo left. After 20 shots, the portal should open and you will complete this challenge. You do not need to enter the portal to receive the reward. Another way to complete this challenge is to gather 20 dead bodies or more, along with the Strange Mask. Then, place each individual body in the Strange Machine and revive them. If done correctly, lightning should strike the Strange Machine. Kill the reanimated body with the Strange Mask, and repeat the process 20 times. Note that you may need more dead bodies as there is a possibility of a lightning strike not incrementing the counter with this method.
Patch history
Players can completely put it in the sack if they don't want to accidentally step on it after activating the machine. Once the gate is summoned, its light range is large enough that it can light up an entire Train. Therefore the player does not need to weld other lighting objects onto the train in its place. Currently, this is the lighting tool with the largest range in the game (the other two being Torch and Lantern, respectively) and is also the only tool that emits a distinctive blue light once the machine is activated. The lower the game graphics settings the player sets, the brighter the light emitted from it. This is one of the unique tools that once activated will emit a mechanical effect sound from it. After the latest update, players only need about 12 - 20 lightning strikes to activate the machine. Previously, it took more than 40-60 lightning strikes to activate. The Strange Machine has a similar function to the Portal from Ricomiller's other game Crab Lab. Both are portals which are able to take you to an Island inhabited by specific mobs.
