1 Component The Strange Mask, also known as the Jade Mask, is a utility item in Dead Rails.
The Strange Mask is found exclusively in the Sterling mines, with only one spawning per run. It allows the player to reanimate dead Enemies to fight on their behalf — including powerful ones like Werewolves — offering a significant advantage in high-risk zones such as the Castle or Outlaw's Town. It can also be sold for $250. The mask is located in a blocked-off room in the Sterling Mines, which must be accessed using Dynamite. Picking up the mask normally triggers the spawn of three Werewolves. However, this can be avoided by placing any object (for example a Vase, Bar, Nugget, or even a Ripped Bank Note) on the pressure plate beneath the mask before removing it.

Strategies
To use the Strange Mask, place it on a dead enemy’s body to revive them as an ally. Prioritize reviving stronger enemies for greater effectiveness. Be aware that reanimated enemies will attack tamed horses unless they are reanimated with the Jade Sword. Keep horses indoors or cornered if reanimated — otherwise, they may escape. Do not use the mask on a Dynamite Zombie — if it explodes, the mask will be destroyed permanently. Additionally, other Zombies have a chance to be revived as a Dynamite Zombie, so it might not be a good idea to use the mask on other Zombies either. Although not common, avoid using the mask on Werewolves as they have a small chance to be flung across the void, which takes the mask with it. Revived entities last for approximately 2–3 minutes before dying again. To avoid triggering the Werewolves: Place the Vase found in the mask room on the pedestal next to the mask before picking it up. Other notable mechanics: If an entity dies while wearing the Strange Mask, it cannot be revived again. In contrast, the Primordial Soup can revive the same corpse countless times. Killing a revived entity allows the player to retrieve the mask for reuse. The mask can even resurrect Nikola Tesla, though this may cause him to become stuck. To minimize lightning damage when doing this, stand back and place the mask slightly elevated on Tesla's corpse. A Lightning Rod can also be placed near him to avoid taking damage. If you prefer not to use the Strange Mask, you can instead sell it for an extremely high $250.

The Strange Mask is among the most valuable items in the game, tied with the Brain In Jar, Jade Sword, and a living Unicorn, and only surpassed by Nikola Tesla. It may be inspired by the Mask from Undead Nightmare, which similarly revives the dead. Its appearance is based on Mesoamerican Jade Olmec Masks (circa 900–400 B.C.E). Using the mask on Captain Prescott allows you to obtain a second key, but removes the ability to turn in his body for a $150 bounty. This can also be done with Banker zombies to obtain a extra bank code. Reviving a Horse with the Strange Mask removes its saddle. Mechanically, they are not always suitable for players to revive NPCs. In particular, it is absolutely not recommended to put it in a Sack because you may accidentally drop it with an Dynamite Zombie/Horse (will cause it to lose its saddle and be struck by lightning within minutes) or accidentally cause a lightning bolt that kills surrounding horses (including unicorns). Outlaws revived via the Strange Mask can actually use Maxim Guns. The Outlaw will shoot nearby enemies with unmatched precision, as all shots will likely be headshots. However, if the Maxim Gun runs out of ammo, the gun will no longer shoot. The Strange Mask's effect only lasts for a few minutes before it wears off of the entity.
