Lightning Rod

ItemsDead Rails

Overview[1]

Town; Abandoned Buildings; Tesla Lab The Lightning Rod is a Tool in Dead Rails.

The Lightning Rod attracts and absorbs Lightning Bolts during a Stormy Night, rendering them harmless to players. It works regardless of whether it's welded or not, making it so that players have a much safer time exploring during these Nights (especially those playing as the High Roller). The Lightning Rod can also be used to intentionally redirect lightning towards a certain location for a variety of purposes. The Lightning Rod has a relatively small radius which is about the front to back length of the Default Train's flatcar. It redirects all lightning bolts spawned within its radius, even if positioned under a roof. The center of the tripod base (officially known as the "root part") is used for both the center when calculating the radius as well as the location where redirected lightning spawns. The position of the tip does not matter. The Lightning Rod is occasionally sold at the General Store for $25. It can also be found in Abandoned Buildings and Towns. Additionally, 2 of them are guaranteed to spawn inside the Tesla Lab.

Strategies

Along with naturally generated lightning, Lightning Rods can also redirect most lightning spawned by players, such as lightning from Holy Water, the Jade Mask, and the Electrocutioner. This can be a very easy way to create Unicorn Blood. Simply position the liquid near the base of the lightning rod, summon the lightning, and pick up the Unicorn Blood with a bottle before it disappears. If you plan to use the Electrocutioner as a weapon, make sure to remove any nearby lightning rods before doing so. Lightning redirected by the Lightning Rods will not damage players, but it WILL damage any other entities nearby, so take this into consideration if you decide to bring Horses with you on your journey. If you're bringing Horses with you, do not position them near Lightning Rods. The same applies to Unicorns or Apocalypse Horses, but the stakes are much higher. Lightning Rods can be useful when fighting Nikola Tesla. Keep one in your Sack and take it out whenever he performs his ranged attack. Remember that his melee attacks will not be affected. Lightning Rods can be used to kill Enemies by having lightning strike it while enemies are near it. However, using the Lightning Rod in such a manner is very situational due to the fact that Lightning Storms don't always occur at night. For the Tesla Lab specifically, due to both the Lightning Storm caused by the assembly of Tesla and the guaranteed lightning rods within, this is easily the safest method for handling the Scientist Zombies.

Trivia

When lightning is redirected, it will be signified by the Lightning Rod having yellow electricity surging all over it. Although lightning is blue from every other source, the lightning on the rod is yellow.
