Town; Abandoned Buildings The Lantern is a Tool item in Dead Rails.
Like the Torch, the Lantern is a portable light source that can be picked up and carried around. However, Lanterns can be picked up into a player's inventory, making them far more portable. Additionally, Lanterns cannot accidentally ignite Dynamite unlike Torches, making them far safer to use. Lanterns emit 2 different instances of light. The first one has 60 range and a brightness of 0.2. The second one has a much smaller range of 8 but a much higher brightness of 0.7. Compared to other light sources, Lanterns are relatively weak light sources. The Lantern is occasionally sold at the General Store in Fortified Towns for $15. It can also be found in Abandoned Buildings and Towns. 3 of them are guaranteed to spawn in Stillwater Prison.

Trivia
A Lantern will spawn inside of Abandoned Buildings found along the track. These were added to make seeing any items within much easier. However, you cannot pick up the lantern most of the times. The Lantern is considered to be generally superior to the Torch as is it is both more portable and easier to use, along with still being able to be welded to the Train. However, the Lantern's lighting radius is significantly smaller than the Torch's. Additionally, the Mining Helmet is considered to be superior to both the Lantern and Torch as it lights up an area in front of the user without having to be carried around nor welded to Train. There is a small glitch that when the Train is moving at night, the Lanterns welded on Train will not light. Using a Mining Helmet or a Dynamite Zombie corpse as the light source for your Train instead of a lantern or Torch is a more efficient option.
