Sterling Dungeon

LocationsDead Rails

Overview[1]

Skeletons; Acid Skeletons; Miner Skeletons; special loot: Skeleton Grenade Blueprint; set_spawn?=

The Dungeon has dark stone walls with cells lining each side, some of these cells being open. In the middle of the Dungeon is another locked door which opens after the 3 Skeleton Waves, officially called the Sterling Skeleton Waves. The Dungeon is locked behind a rusty door with skeletal decorations in the Mines, located at the left of the Mines' treasure room. This door can be opened with the Skeleton Key. Once opened, the door will emit a bright white light, illuminating the surrounding areas of the Mines. Once the Sterling Skeleton Waves have been beaten, the locked door in the middle will open, yet again emit a bright white light. Once entered, the door will take the player(s) back to the Mines, right where the first door is.

Lore Implications

Note that every bit of text in this section is pure speculation towards the lore implications this could have on Dead Rails. The Sterling Dungeon may very well be the cause for the loss of many Sterling Miners, which got stuck in the dungeon and were left to rot. Considering the corrosion on the metal cells, this dungeon could easily be centuries old, as Lincoln's Train is also corroded, which presumably would’ve looked like the Presidential Train before derailing in the Texan desert and left to corrode for 34 years. Although, this was presumably exposed to air, which would’ve made it corrode faster. The unlocked cells could easily be explained as corrosion on the locks for those cells, therefore causing them to easily break and swing open. Although, the reason the Dungeon is locked in the first place is a question that lacks an answer as of now.

Gameplay

Upon entering the Dungeon, the game will announce “The dead are rising…” before shortly after starting the Sterling Skeleton Waves feature. Every wave, Skeletons, Skeleton Miners, and Acid Skeletons will spawn in varying amounts, players must defeat all skeletons in this wave to proceed to the next. Wave 1: 5 Skeletons Wave 2: 8 Skeletons Wave 3: 12 Skeletons Upon killing every Skeleton in the third and final wave, players will unlock the Skeleton Grenade Blueprint, allowing them to craft the skeleton grenade. Along with that, the door in the middle of the dungeon will open and players are free to leave.

Strategy

It is recommended to clear out the whole Mines first before entering the door, because the enemies will continue spawning even when the player is doing the Sterling Skeleton Waves, which may result in instant death upon exit. Healing to full HP before entering is also important, as the player can take a lot of damage here due to enclosed space. Do not stand in the corners. That is where the Skeletons will spawn and standing in there will result in the player getting instantly swarmed, leading to heavy HP loss.

Trivia

Entities can also spawn here at Night, as long as the players are here. This is the first location to have text to appear.
