Overview[1]
5 Metal (Box of Sheet Metal); 2 Wood (Player's Inventory) The Crate, officially known as Openable Crate, is a unique Item in Dead Rails.
Crates are unique Items that can contain a variety of different items, depending on its type and possibly the player it is tied to. Players can open or destroy Crates, making their contents appear near their location in most cases. Players cannot open or drag Crates that are tied to another player, though they can still push them around or destroy them. Such Crates are marked with a red outline instead of a white one and its contents will also be spawned with the same restrictions.

Crate Types
There are 6 types of Crates in all modes, each containing different items: Class Item Crates spawn near players using certain Classes when they first load into the game. It contains items specific to that Class that is not spawned in the Inventory. Items obtained this way cannot be sold. Shop Object Crates spawn near players who have purchased Starting Items in the Lobby before they loaded into the game. It contains the players' purchased items. Purchased items will be consumed when the player loads into the game rather than when the Crate is opened, thus being a major problem for players with connection issues. Gamepass Crates spawn near players who own (a) weapon gamepass(es) when they first load into the game. It contains their owned weapon(s) along with ammo for it/them. Player Inventory Crates spawn near players when they die, with most of their items (except the Sack and Items stored inside it) being packed into these Crates. If players had many eligible items inside their inventory upon death, the large number of spawned items may cause significant amounts of server lag. Sheet Metal Crates are purchaseable in the General Store, costing $80 each. Each one has 4 Sheet Metals inside. Christmas Bundle Crates spawn near players who had purchased the Christmas Bundle when they first load into the game. Unlike the other Gamepasses, it only contains the Thompson. It is separate from the Gamepass Crate, allowing players who purchased it to bring more than 1 Thompson into the game.
Event Crates
There are 3 types of Crates which are exclusive to their respective events, each containing different items: Care Package Crates spawn near players when they first enter the Edison's Revenge gamemode. It contains 3 Coals, 1 Maxim Gun, 1 Turret Ammo, and 1 Telegraph. Starter Pack Crates spawned near players in the Yeat Event gamemode. It contained 1 Telegraph and 1 Poster, alongside 1 Rifle with 2 Rifle Ammo, 1 Shotgun with 2 Shotgun Shells, 1 Navy Revolver with 2 Revolver Ammo. Starter Pack Crate(s) also spawn near player(s) when they first enter the Frost Bite gamemode. It only contain 1 Rifle with 2 Rifle Ammo, 1 Shotgun with 2 Shotgun Shells, 1 Navy Revolver with 2 Revolver Ammo.

Loadout Crate
The Loadout Crate has different behavior and usage compared to the other Crate types. It is used to bring crafted items into games. When interacted with, it opens up a UI containing up to 5 items instead of disappearing and spawning its contents nearby. If the last item is taken out, it will disappear. However, unlike other Crates, items in Loadout Crates will not be consumed until they are taken out. If the owner of the Loadout Crate leaves (and optionally rejoins) the game, the following things will happen: All players will be able to interact with that specific Crate. Each player will see their own crafted item loadouts instead of seeing the owner's. If the last item is taken out, the Crate will not disappear. The owner can add, remove, or change their current loadout items in the lobby before rejoining the game. Similar to other Crates, it can also be destroyed. This will cause its contents to become inaccessible for the rest of the game instead of having them drop nearby.
Patch history
The Crate has a part that is colored differently than the rest of it. It is unknown whether this is intentional or not. Currently, "Box of Sheet Metal" is the only Crate which does not spawn near any players, instead spawn inside General Store, costing 80 each. While players cannot pick up items dropped from others' Class Items, Starting Items, and Gamepass Crates, they can pick up items dropped from others' Inventory Crates. Despite being a weapon that can be held inside the Inventory, the Vampire Knife is spawned inside a Class Item Crate instead. The cause for this is unknown. Inventory Crates used to have a glitch where it did not give players Arrows after being revived. Revolver Ammo is the only Item that can be spawned from most Crates (except for the Box of Sheet Metal, Christmas Bundle and Care Package). The Crate containing 4 Sheet Metals is named "Box of Sheet Metal" rather than "Crate of Sheet Metal." The Crate is one of four items that do not have titles or descriptions. The others are Camera, Tumbleweed and Ladder. Despite this, Crates containing 4 Sheet Metals still display titles and descriptions as normal. Other Crates seems to already have titles on top of them, while descriptions are pretty explanatory. The Care Package Crates have a different appearance and hitbox than normal Crates, resembling an enlarged version of Cannon Balls. However, they function identically with normal Crates. Sheet Metal Crates were previously known as Boxes of Sheet Metal.
