Usage & Tactics
The Shovel shows similarities to the Bat in function. However, it significantly increases damage and stun time in exchange for higher stamina usage, much longer cooldown/delay, an inability to block, and, surprisingly, shorter range. Compared to nearly all other melee weapons, it has a longer delay and cooldown. This almost makes it a side-grade to the Fire Axe (barring the existence of the Sledgehammer), with less skill involved due to the wide swing range, but more strategy required in order to make the most out of this weapon. Even though it has a reasonably wide swing range, players must still be careful about their positioning as this weapon is much more easily punishable than other melees, especially in large rooms or open areas. The one attribute that makes the Shovel viable is the excessively lengthly concussion time following a headshot, far longer than any other weapon. This powerful concussion usually leads to the wielders' victory if a headshot is scored, as the concussion time is long enough for the swing cooldown to finish and get in another follow-up swing. However, you may also use another light melee to finish off the concussed enemy, such as a Bayonet, as this eliminates the possibility of the enemy getting up and dodging your follow-up. Its large hitbox width makes it easy to aim and hit in Close-Quarter-Combat (CQC), and landing a hit will deal a massive 60 damage. Unfortunately, the hitbox by the top is relatively large, resulting in the system detecting other body parts before the head (an arm, for example), causing you to miss the concussion.
Blocking
The shovel cannot block. The shovel can be blocked by, Metal Bat, Scythe, Slayer's Sword II, ERADICATOR, Sledgehammer
Pros & Cons
Very high damage. Fractures any limb with a single hit. Wide swing radius. Long concussion time. Unlocked at level 1. Cheap. Only 4 slots. Can be found in Scrap Piles and Weapon Crates. Unblockable by almost all melees. Especially the Katana Janky hitbox. Cannot block. Extremely punishing for missing. Very long attack delay and cooldown. Slow swing speed. Movement speed and jump height reduced while equipped.
Patch history
Before V1.2.0, the shovel prevented you from jumping while equipped. In V1.2.0, the shovel received arguably the biggest buff of any weapon Damage 40 → 60, $175 → $145, Concussion time 1.5s → 2s, Slots 5 → 4, Ability to jump while equipped In the Pre-Beta release of Criminality, the shovel could be blocked by more weapons like the Machete and wooden Bat. In V1.0.3, the shovel was changed to be automatically unlocked at level 1. The shovel was added to green Scrap Piles in V1.3.3 The damage was also increased from 30 to 40 at the cost of a longer cooldown. In V1.1, the shovel had a nearly broken hitbox, which made it phase through players majority of the time. Category:Melees
