Usage & Tactics

The Sledgehammer is pretty slow with a buggy hitbox like the Shovel. Even with the low stamina usage, the wielder should land their swings carefully due to how vulnerable they'll be after each swing. While one hit from the Sledgehammer does a whopping 70 damage, it is recommended to go for the head as striking it will instantly break their neck, resulting in a bleed out, similar to how hitting the head with the Fire Axe with instantly kill a player, but without the tricky hitbox. It is best used as an ambush weapon or paired with a Rage Dose as people will commonly predict the wielder's movements when rushed without one, easily dodging the swings. The Sledgehammer is a fearsome weapon to be up against in a melee duel, and anyone faced with such should steel themselves for a hard fight, no matter what skill level their opposition is at. While the swing pattern is easily predictable and the cooldown easily punishable, being hit even once will nearly guarantee your downfall, and the Sledgehammer is also able to quickly follow up a block (which can counter nearly every melee in the game) with a skull-crushing blow, which your stunned self will be helpless to defend against. If fighting against this weapon, bait out the swing and then immediately get close and try to go for a concussion (if using a blunt melee) or get a hit in, then dodge out.

Trivia

The Sledgehammer is the second melee in the game to deal both Concussion and Bleed simultaneously, the first being the Metal Bat. The model of the Sledgehammer does not feature anything sharp, unlike the Metal Bat's barbed wire, so the bleed damage is probably dealt by internal bleeding when the weapon fractures your bones. The Sledgehammer is the only other weapon in the game that can block the Shovel the other weapons being the Metal Bat. The Sledgehammer shares door breaking animations with the RCU Door Ram. The Sledgehammer's model appears to be based off the "Hultafors DB 5000 Dead Blow Hammer" which is also the model of Sledgehammer that Tagilla uses in the game "Escape From Tarkov", although Criminality's Sledgehammer model is in a different color, that being silver. It also seems to be coated in Urethane, a type of plastic, while also probably having the head of the hammer filled with steel balls instead of being full as to mildly decrease the weight and vibration in the handle.
