Overview[1]
The Desolate Deep is an extensive system of caves located beneath the First Sea behind Sunstone Island and the Statue of Sovereignty. Much of the Desolate Deep has active sea mines, which explode and kill the player when touched. Many of the game's Diving Equipment are also purchased here.
The Desolate Deep is located behind Sunstone Island. Go back until you find the Point Nemo Buoy at where you can find a trench and dive down. You'll need either the Basic Diving Gear or the Advanced Diving Gear to avoid drowning. With the Basic Diving Gear, you will need to go down fast. Swim down to the hole and keep going until you find the cave. It is recommended to turn on "Higher Brightness" in the Menu section for brighter and better view in case you cannot see any things while diving to Desolate Deep.Once you dive down to the bottom of the hole, you can see a split passage with a sign warning people to get a proper diving gear. You can either pick to go left or right, but right is highly recommended. It is recommended that you use a Submarine instead of Diving Gear if you are going with the right path. Making contact with any of the naval mines within the passages will cause them to explode and instantly kill the player. The naval mines can often blend with the darkness of the stone, it is recommended to have a lantern, swim close to the floor, have the higher brightness setting enabled in the menu, and keep your eyes peeled in order to avoid death.

Cave Passage
When you swim through the slim cave you will pop up from the pond and will first see the Merchant. There, you can purchase the Flippers, Super Flippers, Crab Cage, Reinforced Rod and the Advanced Diving Gear. You can fish in the pond where you can catch fish from the Desolate Deep Bestiary. When the player follows the right side of the cave, they will pop up in the Desolate Pocket where they will see a small cave island inhabited by the Merchant and 2 other NPCs. In order to get to Brine Pool, buy a Glider for 900C$ C$ (or Tidebreaker for 40,000C$ C$). After that, look for one of the NPCs holding a lantern. Then in the direction he's facing, look up towards the ceiling for a post with a orb in it connected to a rope, this is the easiest way to locate the cave entrance. After finding the lantern holding NPC, swim the way his lantern is facing to a rocky platform. Climb up and head to the right, and climb to the tallest part of the slope then jump and equip a glider, going slightly to the left then take a right into a crevice. After this, follow the path until making it to the Brine Pool. A Reinforced Rod is needed to fish here.
Patch history
The Desolate Deep is one of two major locations where a sub-location is also included in the Bestiary, the other being Roslit Bay with the Roslit Volcano. The Desolate Deep is the only location with two Merchants. It seems that there is a glitch after the Northern Expedition (Version 1.11.0) update. So far, if the character is spawned directly in Desolate Deep (such as setting the spawn point), the Desolate Deep's dark visual effects will not be seen and the Desolate Deep's music (that is, "Children Of The Stars") will not play.
