Wolves are hostile Entities in Dead Rails. They can be seen spawning in either alone in the Wild or in Wolf Packs along the Desert in groups of 1-7. Additionally, there's a small chance for one of the Wolves to be spawned as a Werewolf at a 10% chance (100% with the Hunter class). Wolves have above average movement speed and detection range. They have average stats in all other aspects. Unlike any other Entity in the game, Wolves are smaller and thinner, making them harder to hit with ranged weapons from afar. Additionally, Wolves are the only hostile Entity in the game that can be tamed, turning them from hostile to passive. Wolves can be tamed by dragging a Corpse onto them (even other Wolves). The Packmaster can also tame them by getting attacked. After taming, you can drag them, weld them or store them in your Sack, working similarly to Horses. Tamed Wolves can become very powerful in large numbers.

Strategy
If you are attempting to do the Dance With Wolves Challenge, it is recommended to keep corpses as they can be used to tame the Wolves later on. They cannot climb onto the train like Zombies and Vampires, making them easy to damage. If already in pursuit on foot, they can be eliminated using short or long ranged Weapons due to their relatively low health. This makes them viable as a Fuel source, though not as plentiful as Normal Zombies. A frontal headshot with penetrating firearms do significantly more damage than usual because the bullet goes through the head and also hits the body. Unlike most damage dealing allied units, Wolves can be sacked at any time and released during dangerous situations. They can be a distraction for Enemies or be welded to the Train to partially mimic the effects of Barbed Wire. Due to most Wolves spawning in groups, it is recommended to lay out multiple corpses and feed the Wolves one by one to prevent them from attacking each other. Placing the tamed Wolves in the Sack will prevent them from damaging each other and have them refocus their aggression on the player. Be aware that Werewolves can replace any Wolf in a pack with a chance of 10%. Tamed Wolves that have taken damage can be healed with Angel Tears. Large packs of tamed Wolves can easily overwhelm most Enemies, including Nikola Tesla.
Changelogs
29/3/2025 – Wolves can be tamed by feeding them the corpse of any Entity, rendering them passive. Once tamed, they are capable of attacking any Entity, including Horses, regardless of whether they are saddled. 18/5/2025 - In Scorched Earth mode, similar to most Zombies, Wolves also have a chance to be burned. This grants them immunity to fire and makes them burn their target when attacking.
Patch history
Wolves can be stacked by unpacking them in the same position. They are the only mobs that can be tamed by the player alongside Horses and Unicorns. During the Update on 29/3/2025 (The Mining Update), when a Wolf spawns near a Fortified Town, it'll cause the nearest Turret to waste its entire contents. This is likely due to said tamed Wolf possessing a background 'Hostile' property, causing an overlap. This however, has been fixed. It can be assumed that Wolves attack players due to hunger; therefore, feeding them corpses may cause them to become more trusting toward the player. The player can place tamed Wolves inside the Train cabin to create an effective defense system, allowing the Wolves to kill any hostile Enemies without being killed themselves if positioned correctly. It should be noted that Vampires are capable of killing most of the Wolves, so, if possible, the player should provide protection for them. Wolves are immune to Explosions. The Wolf is the smallest entity in the game. Wolves are the first animal that do not have common variations like horses. The player community considers them to be the "cutest" entity. The Wolf can sometimes carry a dead bodies while running if the angle is right. There is a Glitch where a Wolf's limbs disappear when dying. Since Wolves have a 10% chance of being a Werewolf, there is normally a 0.00001% chance for a pack of 7 Wolves to all become Werewolves. This will always happen when using the Hunter Class.
