Overview[1]

Mines; Blue Night; Wild (replacing random Wolves); Werewolf Biome Werewolves are the strongest normal enemies in Dead Rails.

The Werewolf is a large, powerful entity with an extraordinary muscular physique and a Wolf's head with glowing red eyes. They spawn during Blue Nights when the sky is clear, blue, and full of stars. They also spawn during the Castle fight in one of the 4 rooms or the back area, along with Vampires. Werewolves also have a 10% (100% if any player is using the Hunter class) chance of replacing Wolves within wolf packs that spawn in the Wild. They can also spawn in groups in the Werewolf Biome. Werewolves are one of the strongest enemies in the game, only being surpassed by Bosses. As the strongest normal enemy in the game, Werewolves possess significantly increased attributes to every statistical portion such as health, damage, speed, and detection range. These attributes are enough to eliminate any unprepared player without protection or equipment. However, successfully defeating them is rewarding with the options of selling at the Trading Post for $20 each, using as fuel, or reviving as a powerful ally.

Strategies

Werewolves can be easily eliminated as long as the player can maintain a safe distance from them. Using a long range Weapon such as a Rifle is generally recommended, though this may requires significant amounts of Ammo. Riding a Horse or using a class with increased movement speed allows the player to outrun Werewolves, making them unable to deal any damage. This is a good way to wait out the night, or maintain a safe distance while doing damage to them. AoE weapons with heavy damage such as Holy Water, the Electrocutioner, or a Cannon can effectively deal with hordes of Werewolves. A close enough hit with the Electrocutioner can instantly kill Werewolves. Shotguns are very effective against Werewolves due to their large damage potential. The Blunderbuss can deal a lot of damage and potentially one shot with classes that boost gun damage. However, make sure you have a way to prevent taking or heal the large amounts of damage they deal. Werewolves can climb on top of the Train cabin (Default Train or Cattle Car), allowing players to easily kill them with Melee Weapons. When a Werewolf sees you in a Presidential train and you are low on health, try to hide inside the coffin room. they will wander in a random direction away from the train, allowing you to shoot them. If a Werewolf is through the ladder, it is able to get stuck, allowing you to go through some of the gaps to kill it with headshots. Werewolves can be taken down quickly using the Excalibur as it can strike them with Lightning, killing them instantly.

Patch history

In larger amounts, Werewolves may cause lag due to their large amount of vertices. This is shared by Bosses. Additionally, welding too many Werewolf corpses to the Train can cause it to move slower or be stuck in place for a similar reason. A solution to combat this is to delete the corpses by burning them in the Train's furnace (or a Campfire), eating them as the Zombie class, putting them in the Sack, or traveling far enough away for them to despawn. A lot of Bosses use a recolored version of the Werewolf's body, such as the Easter Bunny and Goliath. Some of them share some hidden similarities that the developers likely forgot to change. For example, killing Goliath counts towards challenges that involve killing Werewolves, meaning that he is technically considered a Werewolf by the game in some aspects. Lincoln has the same stats as the Werewolf (when fought as a boss) and was likely recycled from Goliath (explained above), since his corpse shows the wrong name and can be sold for the same amount of money ($100). Additionally, Nikola Tesla is directly assembled from Werewolf Limbs and uses the same body. The Werewolf has the 5th highest health in the game (500, tied with Lincoln's Ghost when summoned as a boss), being behind Rockefeller (1000) Goliath (3000), Nikola Tesla (5000) and the Easter Bunny (10000). Before the 16/5/2025 Update, a Werewolf required 25 Shovel strikes to be vanquished. It takes 4 shots in the head to kill a Werewolf with the Bolt-Action Rifle at close range. The Werewolf used to have 800 health on Nightmare Mode, but has since been changed to 500.
