The Owl

Overview

*The Forest It is one of the 3 monsters that have a 1/3 chance of spawning depending on which of the Jungle Biome, Snow Biome or Volcano biome is present. The Owl will only spawn if the Snow is present - if it is Jungle, The Owl is replaced by The Cat, and if it is the Volcano, The Owl is replaced by The Ram.

Appearance

The Owl is a humanoid creature resembling an owl with elongated legs, relatively small wings with one spur each and three-clawed arms. It has exaggeratedly large eyes and a massive open mouth with a vestigial beak. The Owl is primarily white, with gray talons, brown scales and gray trim on the edges of its feathers. Its beak is orange. During the 2025 Halloween update, The Owl wore a plague doctor costume consisting of a black hat and plague mask with glass eyeholes.

Behavior

The Owl spawns in The Forest or Snow Biome when night begins, with a chance to replace The Deer. If the Volcanic Biome is present instead, The Owl will be replaced by The Ram. When a night begins, there is a chance of a short scene playing of a Wolf being swooped by The Owl. Afterwards, the following text will appear: "The Owl has woken up" Whereupon the Owl spawns. The Owl's presence is telegraphed by wind blowing at nightfall, serving as an additional warning to players.

Tips & tricks

• The player can easily escape an encounter by not moving during the detection minigame. • The Owl can be stunned or get stuck in the same ways as The Deer. • Its poor pathfinding allows players to get it stuck on obstacles to easily escape. • Since swinging weapons and interacting do not alert The Owl during the detection minigame, the player can easily defend themselves if The Owl spawns wolves.

Trivia

• The Owl was designed and animated by supernob123. • The Owl was replaced with The Ram on the Volcanic Biome update, but was later reintroduced with the Taming update. • The Owl and The Ram are currently the only entities in the game that are capable of scaring The Deer away. • The Owl is faster than The Deer, being slightly faster than an average sprinting player (without Assassin or Alien class). • The Owl may spawn before the scene of them awakening, providing no warning. • Hints about The Owl's existence before it got released are present in structures, specifically the Ice lab and the Ice Temple. • The Owl might be inspired by the myth Kikiyaon or the Owlman.
