Overview[1]
The Newspaper Boys are special entities in Dead Rails that deliver news regarding the latest update.
The Newspaper Boys take on the appearance of 3 child-like entities that roam around the Lobby, interacting with them showcases the most recent changes to Dead Rails. They walk around the lobby deliberately avoiding running into players to "rest nodes" where they then stand briefly before continuing to walk around.

Tabber|24/5/2026| 5/23 - RUN OBJECTIVES RUN OBJECTIVES Every safezone has an objective board, where players can choose between three server-wide objectives to complete. Run Objectives come with both Dollars and Bonds. All servers start with one run objective randomly selected. Servers can have a maximum of three active objectives at a time. Run Objectives can be combat oriented, train oriented, and economy based. NEWSPAPER BOYS The town is growing quickly - and the community needs to stay up to date. Newspaper Boys live in the Lobby Town and provide players with handy, in-game patch notes. Read through the Dead Rails Tribune to learn more about the game’s updates! QOL + BUG FIXES Endless Mode should now be properly teleporting the map backwards to lessen issues with floating point errors in weapon view models. Towns now properly spawn after 92km in Endless Mode. Electrocutioner Gun is able to be recharged by lightning once again. Armor no longer disappears on death. Friendly units can no longer be damaged by players’ melee. Friendly inventory crates are now able to be dragged. The mode selection screen should no longer jump to the default mode at inopportune times. Outlaws’ weapons no longer appear to be able to be picked up and used by the player. Enemy ragdolls should no longer get dragged away from the player to their original death position when unstoring them. Nikola Tesla no longer has the incorrect name label.
ZOMBIES & ENEMIES
Runners and walkers now have a 0–15% random speed variation. Sprinters unchanged. Town zombies can spawn already awake — sprinters most often. Zombies no longer know your exact position from gunfire alone — if they only hear you, they investigate. Zombies respect blocked train windows and obstacles more reliably. Zombie melee damage range reduced by 10%. Miner Zombies now drop dynamite on death. If it's already lit, it still explodes and can't be collected. Werewolves no longer intentionally target neutral entities. Night enemies no longer despawn at dawn — the night just stops spawning new ones. NEWSPAPER BOY IMPROVEMENTS Visual improvements. Newspapers auto-translate into your local language. Newspapers can now span multiple pages. UI, OBJECTIVES & ITEMS New Instructor hint system for tutorial and gameplay tips, including world, offscreen, static, and zombie-noise hints. The crosshair dot supports neutral/friendly/hostile coloring even without a gun equipped. Damage indicators now scale with damage — smaller hits are thinner, larger hits cap around 100. "Can't sell this item" and unsafe lit-explosive storage warnings use the new Instructor UI. Objective boards hint when new objectives are available and warn when the run hits the limit. Travel objective progress now displays cleanly in kilometers. Gunslinger now completes when holding 20 guns; Spear of Longinus completes when acquired. Turret ammo spawns in Gunsmiths again. Lit dynamite and gunpowder barrels can no longer be stored in the sack.
Patch history
The Newspaper Boys are actually 85% the size of a regular model, the Old Man in the lobby being 90%, meaning they only have a 5% scale gap between a large implied age gap. The Newspaper Boys are actually called "testNpc" in the files. This is particularly odd, as the folder for their rest nodes are called "NewspaperBoysRestNodes". This was the first NPC that could walk around in the lobby. On 6/6/2026 the Newspaper Boys were given the ability to hand out multi page newspapers, this was likely because the page wasn't long enough to say every feature added in the 6/6/2026 update.
